I’ve worked from home since November 2011, when I started working for Canonical. I’ve had enough though, and have chosen to go back to working in an office on a regular basis.

No, I don’t have investments in city-centre office spaces, and I’m not a Zoom paid shill. I just think it’s better for me, and here’s why.

Commuter hell

Before 2011, all my roles were all on-site, commuting between six and sixty miles a day, each way. I live in the South-East of the UK, so the M3 and M25 featured heavily in my “sitting in a car, going nowhere” experience point collection.

The last event I went to before The Event was Linux Application Summit (LAS) in Barcelona, Spain back in November 2019! Time flies.

LAS is a community organised event, sponsored and supported by the GNOME and KDE projects. The conference is “designed to accelerate the growth of the Linux application ecosystem by bringing together everyone involved in creating a great Linux application user experience.”.

In November 2020, the LAS team organised a virtual version of the event. The recorded sessions from both events can be found over on the Linux Application Summit YouTube channel.

For a few years we’ve been performing a live version of an Ubuntu Podcast at FOSS Talk Live. This is a lively, nerdy, in-person Linux Podcast event at the Harrison Pub in London. A few shows are performed in front of a live slightly drunk studio pub audience. We are but one troup of performers though, over the course of the evening.

The whole thing is organised by Joe Ressington and attended by our friends and/or/xor listeners. Joe has just announced over on episode 114 of Late Night Linux that we’re all doing it again! Go and listen to that show for a small amount of detail.

Ubuntu Artful Desktop July Shakedown

We’re mid-way through the Ubuntu Artful development cycle, with the 17.10 release rapidly approaching on the horizon. Now is a great time to start exercising the new GNOME goodness that’s landed on our recent daily images! Please download the ISO, test it out on your own hardware, and file bugs where appropriate.

If you’re lucky enough to find any new bugs, please tag them with ‘julyshakedown’, so we can easily find them from this testing session.

Continuing Snapcraft Docs Days

In March we had our first Snapcraft Docs Day on the last Friday of the month. It was fun and successful so we’re doing it again this Friday, 28th April 2017. Join us in #snapcraft on Rocket Chat and on the snapcraft forums

Flavour of the month

This month’s theme is ‘Flavours’, specifically Ubuntu Flavours. We’ve worked hard to make the experience of using snapcraft to build snaps as easy as possible. Part of that work was to ensure it works as expected on all supported Ubuntu flavours. Many of us run stock Ubuntu and despite our best efforts, may not have caught certain edge cases only apparent on flavours.

Announcing Snapcraft Docs Day

Snap is a simple archive format for big things.

Snapcraft is a delightful tool for automatically building and publishing software for any Linux system or device. Our documentation and tutorials are great for getting started with snapcraft. We can always improve these though, so this Friday, will be our first Snapcraft Docs Day.

Why we’re doing this

The goal is to ensure our documentation and tutorials are useful and accurate. We’re keen to get people testing our documentation, to make sure it’s clear, understandable and comprehensive. If we’re missing anything, or there are mistakes then file those issues, or better yet, fix them yourself.
